On June 19, 2008 Alfa Romeo officially introduced the latest sporty supermini car with a very provocative name MiTo. This is an abbreviation, which comes from Milano (Milan), the city where it was designed, and Torino (Turin), the city where it was intended for assembly. In Italian “mito” has the special significance, meaning “myth”, so it was intended to be a legendary car. In the same year, it was introduced to the international public at the British Motor Show. This is a splendid three-door compact front-wheel drive hatchback, which could be rival the MINI and the Audi A1. Although MiTo merits the highest score already, it is still being constantly improved.
Alfa Romeo MiTo was skillfully designed by Centro Stile Alfa Romeo, that’s why it is characterized by such matchless look. The car was inspired by the famous Alfa 8C Competizione and it goes in line with its interior and exterior design. For those who used to drive Alfa Romeo, the MiTo’s cabin would be a real surprise.
You will find the highest quality of the materials inside and the perfect build, which will astonish you. High class air-conditioning system and board computer ensure the perfect driving comfort. The rear of the car offers a rather limited space, but the 250-litre cargo section has all the necessary carrying capacity for the car of this dimensions.
On the other side of Alfa’s impeccable look there is a simple and reliable Fiat’s character. This allows even a novice driver to steer the car down the road. All the versions of Alfa Romeo MiTo are equipped with the Alfa’s new DNA system, which allows shifting between three modes: Normal, Dynamic, and All-Weather. The 3-mode DNA system, by the flip of the switch alters the ESP, traction control, and the throttle response. Alfa Romeo MiTo was created following the true Italian style, featuring a powerful low-displacement turbocharged gas and diesel engines. MiTo is not a cheap car, but its build quality is well worth the money.
Recent EuroNCAP crash test attributed the highest 5-star rating to Alfa Romeo MiTo. ESP, ISOFIX seating and seven airbags, included in the standard safety kit make MiTo one of the most secure sport supermini cars. It comes equipped with bi-xenon headlamps and tire pressure monitoring system, available for a tiny addition of dough. The 1.3-litre diesel powertrain will allow MiTo to meet even the highest and strictest pollution norms, as it emits an impressively very low amount of CO2 (only 119g/km).
The world has gone insane!!! That what many of the conservative gear heads may utter. It was so unusual that in the late 90’s automakers that never had been in the off-road segment started building SUV’s. Mercedes ML, BMW X5, Audi Q7, and even Porsche with its Cayenne, just to name a few… Nowadays, it appears that virtually all the major car brands entered this segment. An all of this is taking place with escalating gas prices, fight against global warming and the world’s consequences of the financial crises – people need bigger, stronger and faster SUVs.
With Maserati and Alpha SUVs coming to the market as soon as 2013 the Italians are sure to get their part of the pie.
The major question then becomes, will a Jeep-based Alfa make much sense for the North America? Will an added dose of luxury and style find its niche in the American market? Will the North American buyers pick a reasonably priced, somewhat a little more expensive, yet more luxurious and stylish Alfa-badged SUV over more common Jeep counterpart? Most likely, the new Alfa Romeo will surpass the luxury and will have the sporting spirit as opposed to its “donor.” In addition, it will not come equipped with Jeep HEMI V-8, but in stead the “Italian” will boast a turbo diesel and a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 with 280 hp.
